The Opportunity in San Mateo County

While San Mateo County is a major engine of the Silicon Valley tech juggernaut, employers are hamstrung by an opaque labor market where talent for nonstandard work is largely hidden and inaccessible.   The best-available national data suggest that over 35% of workers participate in and/or prefer personalized hours of employment.

Who is in this workforce?

They are neighbors who are:

  • addressing personal and family health issues

  • juggling work and school responsibilities

  • seeking additional income and the opportunity to contribute to the community after retiring from full-time employment

  • entrepreneurial career starters seeking flexible work arrangements and opportunities through multiple employers

  • unable to fully document their status

Many of these neighbors face limited work options through gig work apps and very often off-the-books arrangements made through word of mouth.

Our Plan

SVCMG will partner with employers and workers in the county to create a countywide platform for multiple contingent work roles.  Called CalFlexi, the platform will offer workers a pathway to become architects of their own economic success through a heightened sense of control of their work hours and work location.

Employers will benefit from access to a sophisticated data base of vetted talent and, through engagement with community-based employers of record, the ability to select talent with W-2 or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) status as well as liability and workers compensation insurance.

Our Story

The origins of CalFlexi date to British government programs and then were refined in California after a City of Long Beach proof-of-concept, funded by national philanthropies. The Long Beach pilot won a prize in 2018 for best community-led economic development initiative in America presented by the U. S. Conference of Mayors
